A Dive into History: Exploring Ancient Elea-Velia, Just a Stone’s Throw from the Resort

Staying in the heart of Cilento, in Ascea, means more than just enjoying breathtaking beaches and exquisite cuisine. It also means immersing yourself in a millennia-old history that has shaped Western thought. Just minutes from our resort, a journey back in time awaits you: the Elea-Velia Archaeological Park.

Elea-Velia: Cradle of Philosophy and Magna Graecia

Founded around 540 BC by Greeks from Phocaea (in present-day Turkey), the city took the name Elea. Later, under the Romans, it became known as Velia.

But why is Elea so important? This city was the home of the famous Eleatic School, one of the most influential philosophical movements of antiquity, which boasts figures such as:

  • Parmenides: The founder, famous for his doctrine of the unity and immutability of Being.
  • Zeno: His disciple, known for his famous paradoxes (such as that of Achilles and the Tortoise) used to defend his master’s theories.

Walking among the ruins of Velia, you breathe not only the history of Magna Graecia, but also the air where concepts that have defied logic for centuries were born!

What Not to Miss During Your Visit

The Archaeological Park is a vast and fascinating area. We recommend dedicating at least half a day to exploring:

  • The Pink Gate (3rd century BC): This is the symbol of the Park. It is the only example of a Greek-era round arch in Italy. It was not a city gate, but a hydraulic and road system that connected the two districts of the city. A masterpiece of ancient engineering!
  • The Acropolis and the Theater: Climb the Acropolis hill to enjoy a spectacular view of the sea and the Cilento coast. Here you’ll find the remains of the temple and, a little further down, the Theater. Imagine the performances that were held with such a majestic panorama.
  • The Southern District: Here you can admire the remains of shops, houses, and the Baths, which tell the story of daily life in the Roman city.

A Unique Experience, Just Minutes From Your Stay

Velia’s beauty lies in its unique location: the ruins extend from the plain to the hill overlooking the sea, sublimely blending history and landscape.

After a morning spent exploring ancient wisdom, there’s nothing better than returning to the comfort of our resort in Ascea. You can relax by the pool, enjoy a Cilento lunch, and reflect on the philosophy of Parmenides, perhaps sipping a glass of local wine.

Elea-Velia is more than just a trip; it’s a cultural enrichment that makes your Cilento holiday complete. We look forward to welcoming you for a stay that combines relaxation, nature, and the eternal wisdom of Magna Graecia!
